Attorney Cleared in Drug Case Sues Sheriff

EVERGREEN, Ala. (AP) An Evergreen attorney arrested on drug charges that were later dismissed has filed a $13.5 million dollar federal lawsuit against the Conecuh County sheriff Tracy Hawsey and former sheriff's investigator John Greene.

56-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Oswald Stoddard filed suit last week over the 2003 arrest. She alleges false arrest among other claims.

In 2003, Stoddard was charged with possession of controlled substances after deputies searched her office and found prescription tranquilizers and painkillers. The case was turned over to the state attorney general's office, which dismissed the charge. . . .

[A]n attorney representing Stoddard alleges that she was targeted because she successfully defended clients in drug cases made by Hawsey and Greene. He said they wanted to -- quote -- "destroy her law practice."
