Washington State Supremes Slam Same-Sex Marriage

As I'm sure you already know, yesterday the Washington State Supreme Court ruled that the legislature's enactment of a statute restricting civil marriage to one man and one woman is constitutional under the state's Constitution. In other words, it does not violate gays' and lesbians' constitutional rights to deny them the benfits of civil marriage based soley on the fact that they seek to marry a person of the same gender.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I'll let Howard Bashman of How Appealing do the heavy lifting. His roundup of today's news and editorials about the opinion is here. His link to the opinion itself (actually six separate opinions . . .) is here.

I particularly recommend Justice Mary E. Fairhurst's dissenting opinion, and this editorial from Danny Westneat of the Seattle Times.
