Among the names forever linked to legal issues is Palsgraf, known to all tort scholars for a state high court ruling on duty and proximate causation that became the law of the land. But the New York railroad station explosion that injured Helen Palsgraf 80 years ago not only made her family name a household word among lawyers, it also began what some of her descendants call a curse, involving decades of bad luck, serious injuries and lost lawsuits.
