Suspension Recommended for Attorney for Allegedly Inflating Resume

The D.C. Bar's Board on Professional Responsibility recommended a 30-day suspension for attorney Gregory Hawn on Dec. 5 for allegedly padding his résumé.

In April, Legal Times reported that the D.C. Bar Counsel had accused Hawn, a second-year associate in Bracewell & Giuliani's Washington, D.C., office, of falsifying his résumé and altering his law school transcript while trying to land a job at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's Los Angeles office. Hawn quit Bracewell soon after the firm learned of the charge, which arose after Hawn used a legal recruiter to help with the attempted lateral move.

He forwarded one version of his résumé and transcript to the recruiter and sent a different version to Mayer Brown. According to the Bar Counsel, both contained falsehoods. Among the peccadillos were Hawn's claims that he received the Myers Society Scholarship for Academic Achievement; that he was honored with the American Jurisprudence Legal Rhetoric and Writing Award; and that he had been an E. Robert Hinneman Finalist for Moot Court Appellate Advocacy. He also managed to raise his grade-point average almost half a point after graduating from law school.
