In case you've been living under a rock, Brangelina Jolie-Pitt just sold exclusive pictures of their (its?) newborn daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to People magazine for $4.1 million for the U.S. and to Hello! for $3 million for the U.K. and Europe. The Jolie-Pitts pledge to donate all the proceeds to an as yet-unnamed charity.
Before either magazine could street, the purported cover of the forthcoming Hello! showing one of the pictures was "leaked" to The Internets, and it immediately appeared on various websites, including Gawker.
Time Inc., People's corporate parent, quickly sent out "cease and desist" letters and threats to sue. Gawker, for one, claims "fair use" and refuses to take down the images. Gawker has published the (rather amusing) exchange of its correspondence with Time's lawyers here.
