Father and Son Lawyers Accused of Stealing

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A disbarred personal-injury lawyer and his attorney son stole $1.1 million from clients, state prosecutors said in charges filed Tuesday.

Mark D. Frankel, 57, and Stephen M. Frankel, 33, each were charged with multiple counts of theft, and the son also was charged with conspiracy.

A bookkeeper at Frankel and Associates told investigators that more than $1 million that was supposed to benefit clients instead went to pay payroll taxes, and more than 50 clients had not received their settlements, according to an arrest affidavit. . . .

[M]ark Frankel was disbarred last year after the state Supreme Court Disciplinary Board found that he engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior with clients. He contested the allegations. . . .

[H]e was arraigned on 61 criminal counts Tuesday morning and jailed on $100,000 bail.

The younger Frankel, who lives in Frederick, Md., was arraigned on 30 criminal counts Tuesday afternoon and released on $50,000 bail, officials said. A telephone listing in his name could not immediately be located. Frankel and Associates' phone service has been disconnected.
