1 In a previous incarnation, this bar (at 540 Clement Street, San Francisco) was known as "Max's 540 Club." I practically learned to drink there during high school in the late 1970s with my dearly departed friend, the great Mark O'Leary. Back in those days, the place was so thick with cigarette smoke and gray haired alcoholics that the bartenders would serve anyone, including 16 year old boys. [Rest assured, they don't do that anymore.]
