[to any of my regular readers who find this post - I apologize. I am trying to sell a rare instrument, and figured that posting about it here was a good way to let Google help people who might want it find me. Please ignore what follows:]
FOR SALE: Yanagi Gauge & Instrument Manufacturing Co. Ltd. Barometer
Serial number 2775, Stamped "41-5" [May 1941 ?] We think this instrument may have been manufactured in Japan just a few months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. We think very few others exist (many may have ended up at the bottom of the Pacific).
This barometer is in a shiny brass case. It weighs about 12 pounds. Overall it is about 9 3/4" in diameter. The dial is 7" in diameter. It is about 4 1/2" deep.
Its range is from 920 - 1040 mbar / 690 - 785 mm Hg (or about 27.2 - 30.7 inches of mercury).
It was made for a ship, to always operate at sea level. Its maximum working elevation is 100 feet above sea level.
***WARNING: THIS BAROMETER WILL NOT WORK AT ANY ELEVATION GREATER THAN 100' ABOVE SEA LEVEL, AND IT MIGHT BE DAMAGED DURING SHIPPING IF SHIPPED AT ELEVATIONS GREATER THAN 100' (including all airplanes) DURING TRANSIT.***
This barometer has SIX aneroid cells -- three on one side, and three on the other. This is to compensate for acceleration (the rolling of the ship and/or the concussion of her guns). The instrument is compensated for both acceleration and temperature. It is extremely sensitive and accurate.
