A [Mississippi] State Supreme Court justice already accused of fraud and bribery has been charged with trying to extort money from two lawyers who had a case before the court.
A lawyer with ties to the justice, Oliver Diaz Jr., also is accused in an amended federal indictment filed Friday. According to the indictment, the lawyer, Paul Minor, told the other lawyers that Justice Diaz's influence "helped swing the vote in favor of their client."
The two lawyers, who were not named, were defending an appeal in which their client had been awarded $9 million. The indictment said Mr. Minor asked for at least $20,000 for Justice Diaz when the court was to consider rehearing the case.
Both lawyers refused, according to the indictment.
