N.J. Cheerleader's Death in Hawaii Ruled Accident

Injuries sustained by a New Jersey cheerleader who fell to her death from a hotel balcony last week suggest she did not jump and was not pushed, according to a medical examiner.

Lauren Crossan, 18, of Randolph, N.J., died Jan. 12 during a trip to perform for the college football Hula Bowl. She was "markedly intoxicated" at the time of her death and was susceptible to disorientation, said Dr. Anthony Manoukian, Maui County medical examiner.

The girl had a blood alcohol level of 0.17 percent, Manoukian said, far above the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent for drivers. Police previously incorrectly reported Crossan's blood alcohol level was 0.18 percent.

Lauren Crossan's injuries indicate she hit something - possibly the building - during her 80-foot plunge from the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Manoukian said. Had it been homicide or suicide she likely would have cleared the building, he said.
