Europe's Legal Music Alternative

Once again, it looks like the Europeans are ahead of the US in successfully implementing a major new technology:

When it comes to legally downloading music in Europe, there's one name that's both way out in front and hidden in the background: OD2.

Since OD2 was started nearly four years ago by the musician Peter Gabriel as On Demand Distribution, it has gradually become the dominant technology provider behind music services in Europe.

But most consumers do not know they are using OD2; they know only the name of their retailer or service provider, like HMV, Freeserve or MTV. The pricing, options and selections are similar whichever Web site is using OD2 technology, analysts say.

The International Herald Tribune has the story here.
