East Coast Heir On Trial for Murder

Galveston, Texas. Morris Black was described by acquaintances as a volatile loner and drifter who lived in a cramped, $300-a-month apartment in this Gulf Coast community.

Across the hall lived a mute woman called Dorothy Ciner, according to the landlord. In late September 2001, authorities say, the two neighbors' paths crossed violently.

Next thing you know, Black's body parts start washing up along Galveston Bay in trash bags. Some of the bags also contain evidence identifying Robert Durst, an estranged member of one of New York's wealthiest real-estate families.

Not to give away the punchline, but police eventually learn that the victim's neighbor, Dorothy Ciner, was neither mute nor a woman. In fact (s)he was Robert Durst, living incognito. Now Durst is going to trial for Black's murder. (Proof once again that truth is stranger than fiction.)
